Varsity can’t evict protesting students – court

2010-09-10 10:31

The Mthatha High Court in Eastern Cape has ruled against the Walter Sisulu University for evicting protesting students from their residences.

The Dispatch Online has reported that Justice Lusindiso Pakade ruled against a decision by the university management to evict students at the Nelson Mandela Drive campus.

This came after the students held protests and demanded that vice-chancellor Marcus Balintulo step down.

The Dispatch Online said disruptions began last Monday when staff members conducting a disciplinary hearing were allegedly taken hostage by protesting students.

The court, however, did grant the university an interim order against students vandalising university property, intimidating and harassing staff and interfering with the academic programme.
