Vavi no longer a twit

2012-05-05 16:49

Don’t bother sending a tweet to Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi (@zwelinzima1) – he won’t check it.

The labour federation leader left Twitter almost as soon as word began spreading that he had joined the social network.

Vavi had been quietly lurking on Twitter since January.

But the tweet that really got him trending was one last week announcing that the ANC and Cosatu had agreed to postpone e-tolling for a month.

He notched up more than 16 000 followers in a week – and counting.

This week, though, he suddenly announced that he’d be leaving Twitter, although a few tweets with facts from one of his speeches followed.

He also hasn’t deleted his profile.

“It isn’t worth it,” he told City Press on the sidelines of a National Union of Metalworkers’ regional conference in Vanderbijlpark yesterday.

“It takes a lot of time and you get emotionally involved. Lots of people are good, but one or two send messages that are really negative.”

Vavi said he had 2 million people in Cosatu and they are all positive, so he would rather focus his energies there.
He added that Twitter took up too much time, which begs the question: how does Western Cape premier and DA leader Helen Zille (@helenzille) juggle it all?
