Venus to cross sun

2012-06-05 12:35

Venus will cross between Earth and the sun tomorrow in a rare astronomical event.

The Daily News reported today that the phenomenon has only happened six times in recorded history.

“This is a very exciting time because the last time this event happened, scientists around the world used it as a way to measure our solar system,” said spokesperson Prashina Kallideen of the University of KwaZulu-Natal cosmology research unit.

The next time Venus crosses the face of the sun will be in December 2117.

The event would be partially visible from parts of South Africa, but those living on the KwaZulu-Natal coast would have the best view.

Kallideen said those who wanted to watch it would need to use eclipse glasses to avoid damaging their eyes.
