Victim’s daughter forgives De Kock – report

2012-02-13 08:02

The daughter of one of the people apartheid police hit squad leader Eugene de Kock killed in Swaziland said she forgave him.

Marcia Khoza, whose mother Portia Shabangu died in an ambush in Mbabane in 1989, spent more than an hour with De Kock at Pretoria Central Prison yesterday, The Star newspaper reported.

“I thought I would cry, but strangely enough had the courage to continue to listen to him,” Khoza told the newspaper.

“I was not jolted because I had long forgiven him and have since learnt that resentment and bitterness will blur my vision on life.”

De Kock had explained to Khoza that her mother and two others from the Free State – Thabo Louis Mohale and Derek Mashobane – were “sold out” by the ANC and handed to him and his Vlakplaas operatives “on a platter”, according to the report.

He told her that her mother was a heroine because she refused to work for the apartheid government.

“Frankly it felt like I had finally found the missing puzzle in the jigsaw of my life,” Khoza told the newspaper.
