Villagers to appear in court after vigilante attack

2011-06-22 15:02

Thirteen villagers will appear before the Flagstaff Magistrates’ Court in Pondoland on Friday for yet another Eastern Cape vigilante attack that left three alleged housebreakers dead.

Police said the attack occurred at Ndimakude village in Flagstaff last Wednesday after residents claimed they were terrorised by four alleged housebreakers.

One alleged housebreaker survived the attack and is currently in custody for housebreaking.

The men were “arrested” for two days by community members on Monday and Tuesday last week and kept at a local community hall where they were interrogated and assaulted with villagers taking turns to guard and beat them overnight.

They were taken to the local sports field on Wednesday afternoon and beaten to death by angry villagers.

Two of the dead are from the village and are aged between 20 and 25.

The 13 villagers face three counts of murder, four of kidnapping and one of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
