Vodacom appoints new CEO

2012-07-05 09:07

Shameel Joosub had been appointed Vodacom Group chief executive, the company announced today.

He would succeed Pieter Uys, who had decided to step down at the end of March, the group said.

Joosub, who is chief executive of Vodafone Spain, would take up his new appointment on September 1.

Uys had worked at Vodacom for almost 20 years, including four years as chief executive.

“On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Pieter for his many achievements in establishing a great business. We are grateful for his vision, leadership and commitment over the past two decades,” said Vodacom board chairperson Peter Moyo.

Moyo welcomed Joosub, who used to be the managing director of Vodacom SA, back to the company.

“Shameel will be ideally placed to build on Pieter’s substantial legacy.”

Uys described his two decades at Vodacom as “fantastic”.

“I’m hugely proud of our people. Together we have created a powerful and trusted brand at the centre of our customers’ daily lives.

“It’s now time for change, and I will leave Vodacom confident that the business will prosper under Shameel’s leadership,” he said.

Joosub said he was excited to rejoin the team in South Africa.
