Vote ’em in, vote ’em out

The Democratic Alliance (DA) maintains that “the greatest check on corruption is the willingness of voters to hold their (individual) representatives to account by voting them out of office”.

True. We voters would only be too willing to vote out these seemingly increasingly corrupt political representatives, if we could.

But of course, the undemocratic system in South Africa, where it is political parties only that nominate their representatives to Parliament and the 23 million voters have no say whatsoever, means that the DA’s statement is just a pie in the sky.

The aftermath of Travelgate, where the ANC even returned convicted thieves to Parliament as well as to lucrative posts in government, is proof of that.

The recent expenses scam as described by Patricia de Lille, which allegedly also involves DA and Congress of the People members, shows that political parties cannot be trusted to do the right thing.

In order to stop this seemingly out-of-control corruption by politicians at all levels of government and finally make them individually accountable, South African voters must finally claim true democracy for themselves by insisting on the right to directly elect their chosen politicians to Parliament as well as in provincial and local elections.
