Wait ahead in Baby Kruger case

2010-04-28 13:55

The bail application of the accused in the battered baby case is unlikely to be heard during their next court appearance.

The accused, Gerald Nyatumbo (25) and Nelson Maphosa (28), allegedly attacked Marzaan Kruger (1) and her minder, Francina Sekhu last week. They are facing charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, as well as two counts of attempted murder each.

The case was postponed to May 12 by the Johannesburg Magistrates Court today. The state requested the postponement so that it could establish whether the accused were in the country legally and to confirm their identities and residential addresses.

Nyatumbo had asked that he be released on a warning because he claimed the police were looking for his brother, but arrested him instead.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Eugene Opperman has confirmed that a third suspect is still on the loose. “We believe he is a crucial person in this case.”

  • Sapa reported baby Kruger was still in a serious condition in the ICU of the Sandton Medi-Clinic. "She is still  sedated, but there are signs of improvement," hospital spokesperson Liezl Furlong said.
