Classes at the Walter Sisulu University in the Eastern Cape were set to resume tomorrow with a revised academic calendar to make up for time lost during a strike.

“We had to reschedule the academic calendar and we are going to be utilising Saturday mornings for learning,” spokesperson Angela Church said today.

Among the changes, the September holidays, which were normally a week long, would be cancelled and exams were also set to continue into mid-December.

She assured students and parents that there were enough “contact days” to complete work for the year.

Staff at the university were on strike for seven weeks demanding a salary increase of between 8% and 10%.

Disruptions because of the strike led to the closure of the university, and confrontations between angry students and police.

The parties finally agreed on a 5% increase.

Campus was unlocked yesterday.
