Wanted gunman shoots cop

2011-09-22 14:29

A wanted man has shot and wounded a police officer trying to arrest him in Alexandra, northern Joburg, police said today.

Police, acting on a tip-off, cornered the man in a street around 7pm yesterday, Captain Pinky Tsinyane said.

He fired several shots at the officers, hitting one of them in the upper body before running away. The officer, who was not seriously wounded, was admitted to hospital.

Tsinyane said the gunman was wanted for wounding another police officer in a shootout in July in the same township. Police were also trying to arrest him when he opened fire and ran away.

An attempted murder docket had been opened. The man was still at large.
