Watch – Love triangle for romcom fans

2011-07-08 08:07

Something Borrowed (Nu Metro) is a frothy bit of romcom fun that stars Kate Hudson.

Hudson, touted as one of the heiresses to Meg Ryan’s throne, began walking the romcom path in How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days and was an absolute revelation.

However, her second pairing with Matthew McConaughey, Fool’s Gold, flopped with a resounding thud – as did Bride Wars and You, Me and Dupree. So this time, Hudson is trying out the slightly obnoxious, good-for-a-laugh best friend Darcy to Ginnifer Goodwin’s nice but timid Rachel.

For the most part, it works.

Rachel went to law school with Darcy’s fiancé, Dex (a breakthrough role for Colin Egglesfield).

In fact, she introduced the lovebirds.

The only snag is she didn’t realise at the time that she was in love with Dex. With the wedding mere weeks away, Dex discovers he loves Rachel too.

As you can imagine, the film’s premise is tough to negotiate with a light and airy romcom touch, but director Luke Greenfield (who would probably rather I didn’t remind you that he directed The Animal) manages it quite well.

John Krasinski, who plays Ethan, Rachel’s sensitive best male friend, throws some uncertainty into the love triangle.

Something Borrowed is watchable but forgettable entertainment. It will do for a girls’ night out or a date night if you’re a man looking to score points for sensitivity.
