Watch – Muammar Gaddafi’s obituary

2011-10-21 11:03

One of the world’s most eccentric and unpredictable leaders, Muammar Gaddafi, dominated the world stage for decades since coming to power in a 1969 coup at the age of 27.

Inspired by uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt, Libyans began to hold protests against his regime in the eastern city of Benghazi in February this year.

Gaddafi used military force to quell demonstrations, but the protests escalated into an all-out armed conflict, with Nato-led forces intervening.

On October 20, a National Transitional Council official reported that Gaddafi had been killed near Sirte after fighters liberated the deposed leader’s hometown.
