We Are Here: Sing

2010-12-10 14:17

Day 16 (12 December)

This poem forms part of the We Are Here series, a collection of 16 poems by Antonio Lyons that look at gender violence from a male perspective.

She phoned yesterday morning sensing that I needed her. Several weeks had passed without our bond being rekindled; voice to voice, heart to heart, mother to son.

We spoke of where our lives were jobs, economy, social security, holiday plans, family, and creating. We spoke on this day the last day of the 16 days of activism. As I showered, the night washed from my skin and aliveness bloomed in my eyes. Thoughts sifted through my mind like the water cascading over my flesh, steady. Why do I care about these issues? About peoples lives? About speaking?

She was a mother, a woman strong in character and forthright in speech. Tactless but true. Never wavered from battle and made her life’s work the art of helping others. So I guess the desire comes naturally. The execution however is nowhere near as excellent as hers. She has been in my life for 36 years, but I’ve only just begun to know her. She surprises me in ways that catch my breath and leaves me striving towards a better something. Activism is her life. Her strength is my strength. It has always been our strength: me and my two brothers. Early on she planted seeds of sacrifice, of honour, of duty, of service and of preservation. Preservation of self.

My father struck her once and it was enough. She bundled one child off to safety and shielded the other two with her life. She called the law, changed the locks and petitioned for the paper that would say that she was a free woman again. She made a choice she took action. Preservation won the day. Preservation of life…of dignity…of future…of family. And now my life sings a song bought of her action. And now I pass that song to you. Sing as if your life depended on it, because one day it may. Share this song freely and joyously, because you never no where these new seeds will land.

Sing simply because you can.

Sing sing sing!
