We are family

2013-02-17 10:00

It’s Valentine’s Day morning as I lie in a hotel room bed wishing my two best friends a happy V Day.

They are my true loves, you see.

This year, we celebrate 21 years of commitment to each other and plans are afoot regarding a getaway party of sorts to mark this milestone.

In stark contrast, all three of our ring fingers are bare and our love lives limp along with no real possibility of any of us becoming brides in the foreseeable future.

We talk about this, examine it at length, dissect it, moan about it, and then discard it.

We ask ourselves what the point of marriage is when we are constantly hit on by other women’s husbands.

“If we want husbands, we can have them any time. And the best part is we can send then back to their wives once they start getting on our nerves,” we laugh.

We are flippant because a part of us has stopped believing in the fairy tale.

We may be damsels in distress at times, but we are also our own Prince Charming.

The report released by the SA Institute of Race Relations this week may be oversimplifying things.

Meanwhile, I may not have found The One willing to “put a ring on it” yet, but I can guarantee I’m getting a whole lot more loving this year than most married people.

Who says love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage these days?
