‘We aren’t all absent’

2010-11-25 12:11

To mark the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, City Press will be publishing a series of 16 poems by poet/actor Antonio Lyons.

Through these poems, Lyons explores the absence of the male voice in gender issues.

“It came out of an angry moment. It was an outlet, it really was an outlet,” he says about We Are Here, a one-man play based on the 16 poems, which looks at the issues of gender violence from a male perspective.

We are Here came about because Lyons felt a sense of anger at the way in which gender violence campaigns failed to recognise the voice and role of good men in society.

“I began to question, what does that mean? Are the organisers of these events saying all men are abusers, all men are prone to violence, neglect their families and communities and have no self control? Or are they saying they are all absent?”

The play tells the story of a journalist who comes to South Africa to cover its politics and in the process meets a range of men who engage with gender issues.

“I think there is something for anyone who comes to see the play to say ‘I see myself in there’ and to humanise the issues and the men” says Lyons.

We Are Here was developed with actress Lindiwe Matshikiza, is directed by actress/director Warona Seane and runs at TheSpace.Com at the Joburg Theatre, Braamfontein, from 25 to 30 November.
