We cannot permanently vote for ANC because of history – Numsa

2013-05-01 16:49

As the campaign for next year’s national elections begins, the ANC should be at the forefront of championing workers’ rights, the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) has said.

Numsa’s general secretary Irvin Jim said: “We vote for the ANC because there is a history. We have done that in the past and cannot do it permanently.”

He was speaking at a Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) Workers’ Day rally in Sharpeville.

“The ANC must take cognisance of workers rights ... we cannot give that task to the Democratic Alliance,” said Jim.

He said Cosatu has undertaken to support the ruling party at next year’s national elections.

“The ANC should wake up to the fact that organised labour is under attack, with bosses taking ministers to court to ensure that collective agreements are not rolled out.”

Jim maintained Numsa’s stance against the National Development Plan (NDP).

“The NDP attacks the hard-won work by the workers. It gives employers a leverage to hire and fire workers as quickly as possible.”

The NDP suggested that the crisis of unemployment is caused by workers in farms and factories, he said.
