‘We find this motion objectionable’ – ANC after DA proposes whistleblowing email address

2011-08-16 14:20

Legislature members in Mpumalanga rejected the DA’s proposal to discuss its plan to introduce an email address where whistleblowers could report corrupt activities.

Provincial DA leader Anthony Benadie announced the party’s plan as a motion without notice at the beginning of a legislature sitting in Nelspruit this afternoon.

Benadie told the legislature that the DA had created an e-mail account – DAtipoff@gmail.com – to enable government officials to report corruption without fear of victimisation.

“This is our latest effort in fighting corruption in this province,” he said to grumblings from ANC members of the legislature.

“Too many instances of corruption have gone undetected and unreported in this province due to their complicated nature and many officials don’t know who to turn to or trust with information on corruption,” Benadie added.

The legislature did not allow the tabling of Benadie’s motion.

Human settlements MEC Siphosezwe Masango said: “We find this motion objectionable.”

DA spokesperson Willie Venter said the email address would be secure and would not reveal the identity of whistleblowers but only the content of their tip-offs.
