We get our kicks from cellphone pics

2010-03-15 09:03

WORLDWIDE porn viewing on Google indicates a steady increase since

2004, but South Africans’ naughty searches seem to have stayed the same.

Insights for Search is a website which allows users to view trends

online, based on common words typed into search engines.

A spokesperson from Google South Africa says it is difficult to put

the trends into specific numbers, but in the last six years searches for “porn”

on Google in South Africa have not shown any growth. He says it’s important to

remember that only 11% of South Africans are online and that there has been a

sharp rise in cellphones being used to access the internet in the last four

“Free porn” is the most commonly searched for topic on Google,

according to the site, with “sex” and “sex porn” coming in second. Following

that is “porn movies” and “porn videos”, then “teen porn” and “porn pics” with

“gay porn” and “black porn” coming in last.

But many more South Africans may be accessing porn via their

cellphones. A recent survey by market research company Synovate shows that 84%

of South Africans “cannot live” without their cellphones. In this survey, they

also found that 46% use their phones for internet browsing. A government survey

in 2007 showed that 81% of teenagers reported knowledge of pornographic images

on the phones of their friends and would, therefore, have seen such images.

Masilo Modipane, chief operations officer for the Film and

Publications Board, says it is difficult to monitor how popular pornography

access via cellphones is, and added that it is not illegal.

“The FPB will be focusing on the monitoring of the distribution of

pornography online by SA distributors this year, to reduce the risk of exposure

of South Africa children,” she says.
