Cape Town – The peaceful coastal town of Hermanus in Western Cape has been rocked by the brutal murder of a mother of two.

Juliet Haw (43) from Voëlklip was attacked in her home, tied up and stabbed to death yesterday.

Haw’s father, whose name was not made public, found his daughter’s body at about 3.35pm in her home in Third Street after her children’s school called him.

“The school called the grandfather at about 2.45pm to say the children, aged 10 and 12, had not yet been fetched,” said provincial police spokesperson warrant officer November Filander yesterday evening.

The father had last spoken to his daughter at noon when she wanted to borrow a lawnmower from him.

Stab wounds
Filander said the father then left for Haw’s house and saw through a bedroom window that the house was in a mess.

“He went to the front door, which was closed but not locked. He searched the whole house but couldn’t find his daughter.”

The last room that the father looked in was the pantry next to the kitchen. This is where he found Haw, who was tied up and had multiple stab wounds to the chest.

It was unclear if the killer had found the knife in the house or if it was brought to the crime scene. Filander couldn’t say how many times Haw had been stabbed.

At this stage, it appears that only her cellphone was missing.

According to reports, she was unmarried. Friends of the murdered woman arrived at her house after hearing the news. One friend said: “We lost a brilliant soul.”

Neighbours were very upset to hear of the murder only a few metres from their homes. The area was described as a “quiet neighbourhood”.

One man said he had been home all day but had heard or seen nothing suspicious.

“We can’t believe it’s Juliet. She has children. We can’t believe she has been murdered,” said an elderly neighbour.

No one had been arrested in connection with the murder by late last night.
