We need to improve our ranking – Igesund

2014-01-10 08:55

Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund wants to use the African Nations Championship to boost the team’s rankings on the Fifa list.

With the world football governing body classifying the tournament matches as category “A” games, this will see teams amassing points for any win and Igesund said he was encouraged by Fifa’s decision.

He said his aim was to see Bafana in the top eight on the continent so that the team can be seeded for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations draw next month. Bafana are now ranked 13 in CAF and 62nd in the world.

“Our bigger picture is to be among the best eight teams in Africa so we can avoid other big name countries when the draw is made in February. We also have about five players who don’t have caps and this decision will mean they will also earn their first caps, which will go a long way in their international career,” said Igesund.

Although he admitted the group, which comprises of Mali, Mozambique and Nigeria, was a tough one, he said their aim was to go all the way in the tournament.

“Without sounding arrogant and saying we will win, our aim is to go all the way, but our group is not an easy one. All other 15 teams in the tournament also want to win it, so it will be difficult for everyone.”

Three players have had to withdraw from the team because of injuries, but Igesund said they would overcome their obstacles.

“By the time we play on Saturday, we will be ready. From what I have seen in the camp there is a fierce competition for the starting line-up. We have a competitive team and I am confident we will do well.”
