Wear bulletproof vests, urges Cele

Police chief General Bheki Cele has ordered all police officers to wear bulletproof vests when they are on duty, including those working behind desks.

He sent a letter saying this to all deputy heads of police, divisional commissioners, provincial heads, commanders, the minister and the secretariat of police.

“Commanders at all levels will be held responsible if it is found that members did not heed this instruction,” Cele says in the letter, of which Beeld newspaper has a copy.

It states it is compulsory for all operational officers to be in possession of a bulletproof vest. Even officers working in the charge office must wear bulletproof vests.

Last week, the Rosebank Police Station commander in Joburg, Lieutenant-Colonel Thandi Mkhize, was shot 14 times in the charge office while her colleague, Captain Neelavathi Naidu, was shot dead by clerk David Kekana, who was disgruntled with the outcome of a disciplinary hearing.

Fifty-eight police officers have been murdered this year.
