It could happen to anyone, Power FM chairperson Given Mkhari has said about presenter Lawrence Tlhabane’s slip of the tongue, which saw him welcoming listeners to Kaya FM during the new station’s launch broadcast today.

When the first broadcast of the Gauteng commercial talk radio station got under way at 6am with hosts Tlhabane and Siki Mgabadeli, Tlhabane unwittingly announced: “Welcome to Kaya FM 98.7”, eliciting laughs in the studio before he quickly corrected himself.

Tlhabane last worked at Kaya FM as a presenter and was a shareholder until 2010. This is his comeback gig.

Tlhabane and the different hosts on the station have been undergoing training and hosted some dry-runs in the lead-up to the station’s launch.

Mkhari dismissed the slip of the tongue. “It’s human error and such things could happen to anyone. Considering that Lawrence has been off air for quite a while and the last time he was on air was at Kaya FM, we understand why he would make such as mistake.”

The station’s launch party was hosted in a marquee erected in the parking lot of Power House, their Houghton offices.

The festivities were attended by a host of Joburg personalities, including Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane, who braved the morning chill.

VIPs mingled and watched the maiden broadcast in studio, which was beamed on TV screens.

Congratulating the station, Mokonyane said the launch of Power FM was an achievement for freedom of speech, black economic empowerment, and the advancement of Gauteng as South Africa’s economic powerhouse.

“This will be a platform for meaningful engagement around solutions to making the province and South Africa what we all want it to be.”

Ferdinand Mabalane, the station manager, said Power FM would promote patriotism.

Simphiwe Mdlalose of MSG Afrika Investment Holdings, the owners of the station, did the toast while Khanyi Dhlomo of Ndalo Media, a shareholder of the station, delivered the vote of thanks.

In attendance were songbird Yvonne Chaka Chaka and husband Tiny Mhinga, mezzo-soprano Sibongile Khumalo, business tycoon Sandile Zungu, motivational speaker and businessman Bonnke Shipalana and the stars of the station Azania Mosaka, Thabiso Tema and Eusebius McKaiser, who arrived just in time for his 9am show.
