The Welkom man accused alongside his girlfriend of killing Michael van Eck and chopping off his limbs, was a schizophrenic who had stopped taking his medication.

The Welkom Magistrates Court heard yesterday that Maartens van der Merwe (24) was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2001, at the age of 14, Beeld reported.

According to the state, he had stopped taking his medication.

The court referred him for a 30-day psychiatric evaluation and he will appear again with co-accused Chane van Heerden (20) on May 20.

The couple stands accused of luring Van Eck (23) to the Welkom cemetery where they allegedly killed him and chopped off his limbs.

His remains were found in a shallow grave at the cemetery while the missing body parts were found in the couple’s fridge, cupboard and in their garden.

Van Eck reportedly met Van Heerden on the social cellphone network 2go.
