‘We’re all Andries Tatanes’

2011-04-16 21:41

Days after Andries Tatane was brutally murdered, a Facebook page has been set up in his name, called the “Andries Tatane Campaign”.

By yesterday afternoon, it had at least 578 members from all walks of life, race groups and political affiliations.

According to the page, the campaign was aimed at “highlighting that the death and brutal assault on this brave and brilliant young community leader is an assault on all of us”.

It said “we are therefore all potential Andries Tatanes because many protesters have found themselves in stand-offs with police using force indiscriminately”.

The page said the police had to respect and negotiate with local leaders and not intimidate or use disproportionate force in real or potential conflict situations.

“We must ensure that this campaign addresses all issues of modus operandi and protocol in civil unrest or protest and that police units sent to deal with these situations are adequately trained and sufficiently equipped to deal with conflict in the least life threatening and most humane manner”.
