We’re not a banana republic

2012-08-25 13:11

The Marikana mining strike and the massive loss of life should be an eye-opener to the political parties and policymakers of this nation.

The violence and intolerance, particularly in this sector, among the unions should be a foreign element in a democratic society like ours except when the union operates in banana republic.

I mean, how is it possible that members of the union are allowed to carry machetes, spears and guns when demonstrating?

How can this nation allow a situation where strikers hack police officers to death? Are cops not human beings?

On the one side, we, looking from outside, blame the police for their inaction.

On the other side, when they are defending their lives, we call it a massacre.

Police officers are supposed to protect the public and it shouldn’t be normal for an officer to be killed.

The leaders who instigated the poor mineworkers and pushed them to the field of death are the real culprits and should be dealt with accordingly. And may those who are mourning find peace.
