What a diva really wants

For years men have tried to answer the question of what women want. Daihatsu thinks they’ve figured it out – when it comes to cars.

The Japanese car manufacturer launched the Terios Diva earlier this year and they consider it a gift to womankind.

Well, as a woman, I gave the Diva one look and thought: no way! Just think Khanyi Mbau in a Lamborghini, Kelly Khumalo in a Hummer and Jeannie D in an Audi drop top.

Can you imagine any of them in a Terios? Didn’t think so!

I found the orange decals rather tacky. I didn’t like the seat organiser – in the shape of a French maid’s uniform – behind the driver’s seat.
And then I drove it.

While the 1.5-litre engine is not the most powerful, it suffices. You need to be in the right gear and have some momentum to be able to climb a steep hill.

And besides the much-appreciated heel-protect carpets and hidden compartments, there wasn’t much else to tickle my fancy.
But then I took the car to some lady friends and they loved it.

I was baffled. They loved the high seating position; I didn’t. They didn’t mind the absence of arm room next to the doors; I did. We all like the ample legroom and boot space and the organisers to store extra pairs of shoes.

But as a petrolhead, it was one of the most embarrassing cars I’ve ever driven, and made me lose cool points with the boys. Cringe . . .
