What a shambles

Whose not-so-bright idea was it to move the SAMAs to the northern ’burbs of Fourways?

Montecasino, to be precise.

I would love to regale you with tales of fabulosity, good food and great artists coming together to share a special night to celebrate the burgeoning music industry this country has to offer.

But this is not the tale to be told.

I can, however, regale you with tales of shoving, queuing and enough heat in one tiny space to be the primary source of global warming.

Although the venue on the invite claimed it was to be held at La Toscana, the nominations party was split into two venues, with one called the SAMA Club and the other the SAMA Lounge.

Guests were told some story about how there would be performances in both venues and that the nominations would be announced in both sections.

This, of course, was a euphemism for “we don’t have enough space to accommodate everyone”.

And boy, was there a lot of everyone, everywhere.

The idea of two venues – although in close proximity – meant a lot of confusion, disarray and disorganisation while knocking into confused members of the public who just wanted to get on with their gambling.

The badly lit La Toscana proved to be a sweaty and sticky affair, with more elbowing of ribs than rubbing of shoulders with the stars of Mzansi.

Scheduled to start at 7pm, by 9pm we were still waiting and waiting while organisers tried to fix their haywire logistics and people continued to queue to get into the venues.

The announcement of the nominees was meant to be made in a spectacular fashion with performances by Jozi, Voodoo Child, Liquideep, Louise Carver, Ntando, Black Coffee and Culoe de Song in both venues, but instead the list of nominees were put onto screens while performances were going on.

The most exciting part of the evening was when presenters Siya Ngwekazi and Jennifer Su rode through Montecasino on a Vespa.

Prime Circle leads the pack with six nods while Liquideep, rockers The Parlotones and Zakes Bantwini got four nominations each.

Unfortunately most of this was lost in translation, thanks to bad organisation.

The SAMAs will be held at Monte Casino over the weekend of May 20 and 21, but if the nominations party is anything to go by the awards will be more tone-deaf than sing-song.
