What it is doing right

Despite their misgivings about the ANC, white Afrikaans speakers also have something good to say about the governing party.

These are some of the aspects they applaud the ANC on:

» Consistent macroeconomic policies since 1994.

» The ANC has made it possible to achieve social stability and cohesion, despite South Africa’s history of political violence and repression.

Because of this, “the Afrikaans Volkstaters have little support

for their own state and are now aiming at some form of subcultural pluralism within the wider South African society, Orania being an example”.

» The relationship between the ANC-led government and opposition parties in Parliament seems to be much more amicable and civilised than about five years ago.

» More poor people have benefited from government’s social programmes and services such as water supply, electricity, sanitation, housing and social grants.

» Banks and financial institutions are well-governed and regulated.

» The government debt as percentage of gross domestic product is commendably low.

» Many universities and schools are functioning well.

South Africa’s press enjoys better freedom than counterparts in other African nations.

» The ANC government created an environment for a vibrant and independent civil society.

» The judiciary functions well, but more work needs to be done to improve the criminal justice system and the administration of justice.

» More and more South African companies are becoming international business players.

South Africa is able to host major events like the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

The nation is participating in the affairs of the African continent through the African Union, plays its international role on the United Nations and on the economic bloc of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (Brics).
