What to wear to a polo event

Generally speaking, the dress code at polo matches is more relaxed than what you will find at other equestrian events. But guests are still expected to look classy and stylish. This is, after all, the sport of princes and kings.

This past weekend, some of the local chattering classes were a hit while others were way off the mark.

From Basetsana Kumalo’s disappointing outfit of skinny jeans tucked into knee-high, pointy-toed boots, to other fashion disasters, it was clear that dressing for a polo event can prove quite tricky if you don’t know the basic rules.

For future reference, here are some ideas on what to wear on the local or international polo circuit.
