Where are the black TV bachelors?

2012-11-27 13:45

Does anyone watch the hit show franchise The Bachelor and The Bachelorette?

I do. It’s my guilty pleasure. The idea of one guy dating a string of beautiful women, who, for various reasons, are willing to put themselves through extreme dating makes for highly entertaining television.

But I’m wondering: when the hell are they going to bring some colour to the show?

Are there no black people, Indians, Latinos or Asians in America looking for love and five-second fame?

And I’m not talking about the token cappuccino girl who never gets asked on a one-on-one date.

How about a black bachelor for a change?

I can just see the faces of the southern belles drop as they swan out of the limo and clap eyes on the chocolate-brown bachelor with the kinky hair.

Do you think the contestants would be asked if they have a racial prejudice, I mean preference?

It just doesn’t seem right, does it?

And for those who don’t think that having a racial preference when it comes to dating makes you racist, tell me this: why do you think we haven’t seen a black bachelor on the show?

Two black men asked this when they were rejected as prospective bachelors – because they are black, they believe.

And they are suing the show on those grounds.

I read a Time magazine piece about the disproportionate amount of flirting that gets directed at black women on online dating sites.

While American men are flirting outrageously, the least amount of attention is showered on us women of colour. That is demoralising.

I think the reason there isn’t a black bachelor in the show’s near future is that even in a nation as progressive as America pretends to be, Americans are still not ready to watch a black man kissing a white woman.
