Where is the love, Ace?

2013-01-27 10:00

As the Zamdela township outside Sasolburg went up in flames this week, Free State Premier Ace Magashule was nowhere to be seen.

This is the same man who said last month, after the Constitutional Court set aside his election as ANC provincial chair, that the people of Free State “loved” him.

Interviewed at his party’s elective conference in Mangaung, Magashule arrogantly said there was no threat to his leadership in the province.

“I don’t even have to visit branches. They love me. I’m their premier. I’m their chair,” Magashule told a journalist.

Were this week’s violent protests against the amalgamation of the Metsimaholo (Sasolburg) and Ngwathe (Parys) local municipalities further proof of the chickens coming home to roost for Magashule?

The province has been plagued by mismanagement and poverty for years.

Just recently, the National Treasury cut funding to another municipality in the Free State.

Magashule’s comrades have turned against him and are challenging his leadership.

His controversial Operation Hlasela, which saw the premier dishing out gifts like a king, is still under investigation by the Public Protector.

Despite residents’ desperate pleas for him to explain why they should be incorporated into his hometown municipality of Ngwathe, Magashule shunned the people of Zamdela this week.

Could it be because he wasn’t ready to face the truth: people who do not love him?
