White men still dominate workplace – Equality Commission

2010-07-29 11:16

Sixteen years into the country’s democracy and white men still monopolise top management positions, Employment Equality Commission chairperson Mpho Nkeli said today.

Nkeli said at the release of the commission’s tenth yearly report: “White males still dominate. They are recruited, trained and promoted more.”

She said while there had been a slight improvement from last year, government was committed to enforcing more stringent conditions to ensure that companies comply.

“We need to make it easier to prosecute, monitor and ensure compliance.”

The commission recommended an inquiry into why there was resistance to progress and why there was racism in the workplace.

Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana said he was “quite angry” about the report.

He said: “Actually I’m feeling quite angry that we still find ourselves in the same situation we were in ten years ago. Our people, including myself, are running out of patience.”
