Gwede Mantashe, secretary-general of the ANC and SACP chairperson, is in a tight spot.

He needs to be the paragon of neutrality because he’s the CEO of the ANC, but secretly he wants to secure support for his re-election in Mangaung in December. He will be closely watched for possible bias which his detractors will want to use against him in future.

As Zuma’s cheerleader in the Spear campaign, he has shown he’s willing to do whatever is needed for his boss. Now he has to hope Zuma reciprocates.
