Who to watch at #ANCpolicy – Ngoako Ramatlhodi

2012-06-25 14:04

ANC NEC member Ngoako Ramatlhodi has become Zuma’s right-hand man in selling the second transition policy discussion document.

He’s been criss-crossing the country advocating support for one of the documents that have divided the party and is expected to result in robust discussions at the policy conference.

In advocating for the adoption of the policy, Ramatlhodi has used emotion-evoking issues such as accusing the DA of using the courts to challenge government decisions which are the outcomes of a democratic process.

But Ramatlhodi, a qualified lawyer and a former premier of Limpopo, could also be a liability for Zuma.

His extreme views about the judiciary and his eagerness to see the powers of the courts limited could alienate some sections of the ANC who are uncomfortable with attacks on judges.

He also advocates for amendments to the country’s Constitution, saying the ANC made “fatal concessions” in the drafting stage which resulted in “a constitution that reflects a compromise tilted heavily in favour of forces against change”.
