Who to watch at #ANCpolicy – Thandi Modise

2012-06-25 19:12

This uMkhonto weSizwe military veteran was elected deputy secretary-general of the ANC in Polokwane in 2007, when President Jacob Zuma’s faction tried to appease MK veterans who felt alienated during Thabo Mbeki’s rule.
ANC sources said Thandi Modise, ANC deputy secretary-general and North West premier, fell out of favour with the Zuma camp and was sidelined at Luthuli House when it became clear in 2010 that she was sympathising with expelled former ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema, then facing his first disciplinary charges.

Her appointment as North West premier in November 2010 raised hope that, as an experienced politician, she would unite warring factions in her home province. But instead she forged strong ties with a faction that’s campaigning for Zuma’s removal.

While she remains behind the scenes and hardly remarks in public about leadership succession, the league feels buoyed up by Modise’s support.

She is one of the ANC officials who were against Malema’s expulsion, and in the party’s national executive committee she is said to be one of those who backed the review of sentences imposed on youth league leaders.

She’s still generally respected as a party veteran, a gender activist who has been deputy president of the ANC Women’s League, a former MK political commissar and commander and a former political prisoner who became the first woman in the country to be jailed for political activities.

Modise brings to the anti-Zuma campaign the credibility associated with the party’s veterans.
