Who will save the ANC from itself?

2012-04-07 12:35

On this weekend of peace, resurrection and redemption, you have to wonder who will redeem the ANC from itself. What a comedy of errors this week has been.

The Day of the Conferences started early on Tuesday. First on the blower were the old soldiers.

The Umkhonto weSizwe veterans picked up their spears and aimed in the general direction of the youth who had said President Jacob Zuma was becoming like a dictator.

They picked up the spear. At a second conference later that day, the ANC Youth League’s gap-toothed baby authoritarian, Sindiso Magaqa, unleashed his usual garbled nonsense on the nation.

He sounded like a dictator in the making.

Then, as if that was not enough for the Holy Week, the Top 6 leaders of the ANC held their conference later that day. This national leadership said precisely nothing but pretended at unity. All that was clear at Conference 3 was that the officials were deeply divided and not at all in positions of comfortable leadership to provide guidance or succour to the nation.

To prove the point, the youth league’s president Julius Malema was suspended the next day.

The ANC is deeply in need of redemption and resurrection. Who will save it from itself? And does the governing party even know how disorganised and fractured it looks from the outside.

Does it care? We hope so. South Africa is not yet the promised land.
