The newly appointed police commissioner, Mangwashi Victoria Phiyega, is the deputy chairperson of the Independent Commission for Remuneration of Public Office Bearers, which administers salaries of judges, ministers and chiefs.

She is a former group executive of Transnet and Absa.

Phiyega was also the chairperson of the Presidential State Owned Enterprises Review Committee and the National Welfare Forum.

She is from Limpopo and holds a BA in social work, honours in social sciences and an MA in social sciences from the University of Johannesburg as well as a post graduate diploma in business administration from Wales University in Cardiff.

During the announcement of the sacking of suspended national police boss Bheki Cele in Pretoria this afternoon, President Jacob Zuma said he hoped Phiyega would turn around the SAPS.

“We have in the past few weeks witnessed a disappointing spectacle of police officers jeopardising state security by placing information in the public domain in contravention of their oath of office.

“These include management and financial systems as well as breaches of information security within the establishment which has unfortunately become common.

“This is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated if the fight against crime is to continue being effective.

“The minister and the new national commissioner will assist us in dealing with these matters,” said Zuma.
