Will Stars shine against Pirates?

2012-03-28 13:11

The question on every supporter’s mind: Can Free State Stars repeat their fine display against Orlando Pirates this evening?

Stars go back to the same venue – Orlando Stadium – where they knocked Pirates out of the Nedbank Cup four days ago.

The Free State side is the first team to beat Pirates in a cup game since last season’s Telkom Knockout final loss to Kaizer Chiefs.

Since then the Buccaneers went on to lift three trophies – Nedbank Cup, MTN8 and this season’s Telkom.

Stars coach Steve Komphela conceded that tonight’s game would be tough. He expected Pirates to come out fighting to avenge Saturday’s defeat.

But, he said, after tasting victory they would go all out for another win.

“Nobody gave us a chance on Saturday but we showed we are in the same league and won the game but that is history now.

This is a different game as there are three points at stake and if we want to challenge for the league honours we need to collect maximum points,” said Komphela.

Stars will again rely on their top scorer, Edward Manqele, who opened the scoring on Saturday night.

Pirates caretaker coach Augusto Palacious has promised an all-out attack tonight.

A victory for the league’s defending champions will pile pressure on log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Pirates are four points behind Sundowns, who are away to Bloemfontein Celtic in Botshabelo.

Pirates will be without suspended Andile Jali and Siyabonga Sangweni and injured Isaac Chansa, Rueben Cloete, Thulasizwe Mbuyane and Luis Boa Morte.

In another anticipated clash in Durban, Chiefs visit Golden Arrows at Moses Mabhida.

Amakhosi will be out to avenge their first-round defeat after losing 2-1 to the Durban team.

Arrows on the other side, want to move away from the drop zone at the expense of Chiefs.

Other fixtures: Ajax Cape Town vs AmaZulu (Cape Town Stadium); Bidvest Wits vs Jomo Cosmos (Bidvest Stadium); Black Leopards vs Santos (Peter Mokaba); Platinum Stars vs Maritzburg United (Royal Bafokeng); SuperSport United vs Moroka Swallows (Lucas Moripe).

» Kick-off in the Stars-Pirates game is at 7:30pm
