First assignment hands coaches great opportunity.

The Nelson Mandela Football Invitational might just be a friendly, but for the men in charge it means a lot.

Today’s clash between the home side, SuperSport United, and visiting English side Manchester City at Loftus Versfeld Stadium will pit coaches Cavin Johnson and Manuel Pellegrini against each other.

Although there is nothing much at stake, the coaches would want to start their respective tenures in a positive way and win the hearts of their team supporters.

Except for David Silva and new signing Jesús Navas, who have been given permission to miss this tour after helping Spain to the Fifa Confederations Cup final in Brazil two weeks ago, Pellegrini has brought his best arsenal to South Africa as his team use their week-long stay as part of their preseason training.

Today’s match will give the two coaches a chance to implement their tactics and see their players closer in a match situation.

But most importantly, it will give players the opportunity to win starting positions.

Former Platinum Stars head coach Johnson wants to prove he is the right man for the job by beating the former English Premiership champions.

The last time City played at Loftus, in 2009, they lost 1-0 to Kaizer Chiefs.

But in reigning CAF African Football Player of the Year, Yaya Touré of Ivory Coast; Fernandinho; James Milner; Samir Nasri; and Edin Džeko, the visitors have match winners who will give SuperSport United a good run for their money.

United, on the other hand, have vowed not to show any respect for City, and the match will give the Pretoria club’s youngsters a chance to shine on a bigger stage.

Ronwen Williams, the Premier Soccer League’s Young Player of the Season award winner, will have to pull out all the stops.

United’s new recruits – Bennett Chenene and David Mathebula – will also want to cement their places.

But whatever the outcome, charity will be the winner as the proceeds from the match go towards the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

City will take on AmaZulu on Thursday, Mandela’s birthday, at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium to highlight Mandela Day campaigns to a worldwide audience.

This as South Africa celebrates the legacy of the much-loved statesman.
