Winnie slams ‘it’s time to let Mandela go’ statements

2013-06-28 18:50

Statements such as “it’s time to let (Nelson) Mandela go” are very insensitive to the family, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has said.

Addressing scores of local and international journalist who had gathered outside the Mandela Museum in Vilakazi Street in Soweto today, she appealed to the media to refrain from making insensitive comments about the ailing Mandela’s health condition. “I am sure none of you would want to hear the same about your family,” she said.

Madikizela-Mandela was with her daughter, Zindzi, who refused to say anything about her father’s health.

Said Madikizela-Mandela: “As we are informed, there has been great improvement but Madiba remains clinically unwell.”

Before being driven off in her blue-light convoy, she explained that this was a very difficult time for the whole family. “If we are sounding bitter, it is because we are dealing with a very difficult situation, you can understand.”

Madikizela-Mandela also thanked the media for keeping the nation informed about Madiba’s progress.
