Woman gets four-year sentence for faking death

2013-04-17 11:23

A Cape Town woman was sentenced to four years in jail for faking her death to cash in on a R3.6 million life insurance policy.

Cape Town daily, the Cape Argus, reported today that Hanelie Nel (50) was sentenced by the Cape Town Regional Court yesterday.

According to the newspaper, she could serve only eight months of her sentence, under a Criminal Procedures Act provision allowing for the conversion of a sentence to correctional supervision for good behaviour.

The court reportedly heard that she took out a life insurance policy with Liberty Life on September 15 2009, and more than doubled it the following year.

She listed Doretha Kotze (59) as her beneficiary.

Nel approached Charlene van Graan (39), who worked at Avbob Funeral and Assurance Services at the time, and convinced her to issue a fake death registration certificate, in exchange for R100 000.

Liberty Life staff noticed the places of death listed on the relevant documents were not the same and the police were called in. They determined that Nel was still alive.

The Cape Argus reported that Van Graan was sentenced to five years in jail, wholly suspended on condition she not commit a similar offence.

The case against Kotze was separated because the court was not convinced that she had admitted guilt.
