A woman is facing charges of fraud and extortion for allegedly acting as a magistrate, the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court has heard.

Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the case against Sakina Montague (43) was postponed until October 18 for a bail application.

“The arrest was made after Montague is alleged to have posed as an advocate from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, a magistrate and a prosecutor.”

Montague would allegedly approach family members or a person facing charges at the Pietermaritzburg High Court.

“She would apparently convince unsuspecting victims that she had access to information on their case and allegedly request a sum of money.”

She promised to make the case dockets “disappear”, said Jeevan.

Seven people who allegedly paid money to her had notified the police.

“So far the amount that was allegedly taken by Montague is about R150 000. The investigation is still continuing.”

Montague was arrested on Friday in the Pietermaritzburg central business district after an investigation by the detective unit.

Police were making an appeal to anyone who may have fallen victim to the fraud to contact Colonel Govender on 033 398 9727.
