Woman in debt after R50m ‘inheritance’

2012-01-24 11:22

A supervisor at a potato farm outside George, Western Cape, is convinced that she is the lucky recipient of a R50 million inheritance.

Rachel van Rooyen, an employee of the Van Greunen farm at Geelhoutboom, was apparently told of the good news via an SMS.

“I have contact every Sunday with the people promising the money. They have even visited the farm,” she told journalists yesterday.

“She did not want to reveal their identities or contact numbers.”

Despite indications that it could be a scam, Van Rooyen threw a big party to celebrate her 40th birthday in the civic centre on Saturday.

The Van Greunen farm confirmed yesterday that Van Rooyen had worked at the farm for more than six years.

According to an owner of a local boutique who wanted to remain anonymous, Van Rooyen’s family travelled from Johannesburg and Cape Town to attend the party.

Two weeks after she was to receive the millions, Van Rooyen now apparently owes several thousands of rands to local beauty parlours, a caterer and a shop renting out wedding and evening wear.

A car dealer in Geelhoutboom confirmed that Van Rooyen had ordered two vehicles but cancelled the order after media enquiries. She would apparently have paid cash.

Van Rooyen had a dress designed for her and hired 11 evening gowns for family members.

The dress was paid for but she still owes a lot of money on the hire of the evening dresses, said the shop owner.

A family member apparently got a R20 000 loan to cover a part of the costs.

Southern Cape police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie cautioned people to be careful.

Police have apparently received numerous complaints from people defrauded after supposedly winning or inheriting money.
