Woman killed for being too loud

A Free State man has been arrested for the death of a 60-year-old woman who was assaulted apparently because she made too much noise while walking past his house, police said today.

Free State police spokesperson Colonel Thandi Mbambo said the Odendaalsrus man (46) was arrested after the woman died in hospital yesterday morning.

Five people, two men and three women, walked past the man’s house in Vermaak Street in Odendaalsrus around 9.30pm on Friday on the way to their residences at the farm Phillipi in the same district.

It was alleged that the owner of the house accused them of being too noisy and started to attack the group.

“He allegedly hit one of the men on the head with a torch and all five ran away,” said Mbambo.

The man ran after them, caught up with one of the women, and allegedly hit her in the face with an object.

The woman fell to the ground while the rest of the group ran away.

On Saturday morning the woman’s friends went to her house to check up on her but she was not home.

They went back to the place where they were assaulted and found her lying unconscious. The police and an ambulance were called.

The woman was taken to the Thusanang hospital in Odendaalsrus, where she died on Sunday morning.

Mbambo said the man would appear in the Odendaalsrus Magistrates Court soon on a charge of murder.
