Woman rescued from Drakensberg mountains in two-day mission

2013-04-02 08:46

A 41-year-old woman spent two cold nights in the Drakensberg mountains while waiting to be rescued.

The Star reported today that Elmarie Mackier and five other people were hiking in a remote region of the Drakensberg near Rhodes, when she slipped and broke her leg on Saturday.

A rescue operation was launched and ended last night when Mackier and the other hikers were airlifted and taken to hospital.

The group had been on a five-day hike. It was abandoned due to bad weather conditions. Mackier fell as the group were walking back.

According to the report, the six slept in the cold on Saturday night after they had failed to cross a flooded river.
