World Cup goes to the townships

2011-02-22 12:52

Many sports fans in South African townships will get the chance to watch the Cricket World Cup live on television for the first time when the Proteas’ campaign gets under way this week.

The national team’s matches at the global showpiece will be broadcast at 20 public viewing areas in townships around the country in a joint venture, called Proteas TV, between Cricket South Africa (CSA) and Township TV.

“CSA’s vision is to make cricket a truly national sport of winners and Proteas TV allows us to make the national team more accessible to all South Africans,” said CSA chief executive Gerald Majola.

CSA will also hold KFC mini-cricket festivals at selected Township TV venues to coincide with the Proteas’ World Cup matches.

The Proteas face the West Indies in their first match of the tournament in Delhi, India on Thursday.
