World Cup ‘improved SA’s reputation’

2010-10-13 11:16

South Africa’s reputation within the G8 countries improved after the successful hosting of the Soccer World Cup, a study released today showed.

“We have moved from a 44.6 score to a 49.11. It puts us in a different neighbourhood,” said Dominik Heil, the managing director of the Reputation Institute in South Africa.

“At the beginning of the year, South Africa was grouped at a level with several countries with serious reputational issues.

Post World Cup, the country’s rating had improved to be on par with Peru and Thailand.”

The Institute did a study of South Africa’s reputation among G8 countries in January this year and followed it up with a post World Cup survey in August.

The survey did not ask questions about perceptions related to crime.

The research showed that South Africa’s score had improved by 4.51 points from January to August.

However, perceptions of the country by South Africans themselves dropped by more than 11 points in the same period, a decline Heil attributes to the national public sector strike that occurred when the survey was being done.

The G8 countries are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the US.
