World Cup preparations not in doubt – Gauteng premier

2010-03-24 10:32

The premier of South Africa’s most populous province has launched a

robust defense of World Cup preparations, saying the country has “gone an extra

mile” compared to other hosts.

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane also said today that her province

– which takes in host cities Johannesburg and Pretoria – was ready despite media

reports about concerns of transport strikes, hotel rooms shortages and high

crime that are “hell-bent on besmirching the image of our country.”

Gauteng has three World Cup stadiums, and will stage 21 of the 64

matches – more than any other province.

Mokonyane said she was excited and that the opening game at

Soweto’s Soccer City stadium would be like “our first day at school.”
