Floyd Mayweather can run but, ultimately, he cannot hide from the beating in store for him from Manny Pacquiao in a fight that should stir the blood of the boxing world.

This was the opinion of most of the local boxing enthusiasts interviewed by City Press following Pacquiao’s breathtaking performance against Mexican Antonio Margarito in Texas on Sunday morning. Almost all agree that US-based Mayweather is running scared.

“Pacman” dominated the heavier Margarito in a one-sided battle, winning the vacant WBC super-welterweight title in an eighth weight class.

The fight cannot immediately take place due to “Prettyboy Floyd’s” demand that the Filipino should subject himself to Olympic-style dope testing.

Lehlohonolo “Hands of Stone” Ledwaba, the only South African to face Pacquiao, says the Filipino “is an animal” and will cut Mayweather to ribbons. “Pacquiao?is an animal, and looks unbeatable at the moment,” said the man who himself was knocked out in round six by Pacquiao in the United States nine years ago.

Trainer Nic Durandt, who has produced several world champions, said: “Neither man will be able to resist the purse of more than $100 million (R696 million) that will be on offer.”

Boxing publicist Terry Pettifer said: “Mayweather will suffer his first defeat as Pacquiao penetrates his watertight defence.”

Boxing South Africa’s former chairperson, Mthobi Tyamzashe, said: “The delay robs the fans of a superb fight. I have a feeling that Mayweather will turn it around.”

Derrick Thema, a fight devotee, said: “Mayweather should take the fight so that we should know who is the best in the world.”

Promoter Pat Molefe said Mayweather was aware that Pacquiao was dangerous and was deliberately delaying as he plotted sleeplessly.

Two-time world champion Brian Mitchell said: “The delay has been good for boxing and will make the fight the richest and biggest in history. They should earn far more than $100?million.”

Another prominent mentor, Mzi Mnguni, said: “Mayweather is avoiding the fight because he is protecting his unblemished record. Let them get it on.”

Worldwide, boxing fans cannot wait to witness what should turn out an intriguing contest and electrifying spectacle. Both fighters are artists and master craftsmen.

Their punches flash out so quickly, it is almost impossible to follow them with the naked eye. Both have awesomne punching power.
