Xolani Zulu’s lawyer withdraws over ‘finances’

2011-09-21 07:29

The bail application of murder accused Durban businessman Xolani Zulu has been postponed after his lawyer bailed out.

Zulu has been charged with the murder of the ANC’s eThekwini provincial secretary, S’bu Sibiya.

ANC members wearing T-shirts with Sibiya’s face, accompanied by some of the ANC’s top dogs, were present at the Ntuzuma Magistrates’ Court yesterday for the bail hearing, which was postponed to next week.

According to the state prosecutor, this was after Zulu’s lawyer withdrew, citing “financial problems”.
While Zulu has instructed a new lawyer, he was not present for the bail application today since he was still being briefed by his client.

Sibiya was executed outside his Inanda home in July this year. Police recently offered a R50 000 reward for information that would lead to the arrest in Sibiya’s murder.

However, provincial spokesperson Brigadier Phindile Radebe would not divulge whether Zulu’s arrest was linked to the offered reward.

Zulu is said to have been in the taxi industry previously. He now runs a construction business.
The alleged hit man, Zamani Sikhakhane, was gunned down during a shoot-out with police in Welbedacht, near Chatsworth.

Zulu, who remains in police custody, was escorted by a heavily armed police convoy.
Radebe squashed rumours that the heavy police presence was connected to Zulu receiving death threats.

“It is a high-profiled case and would naturally draw a lot of people, which is why police were there,” Radebe said.
